Harry Clifton 'Curley' Byrd
1889–1970 · University of Maryland coach, athletic director, and president
Byrd spent nearly his entire adult life on the College Park campus — arriving as a student in 1905 and serving as coach, athletic director, and university president from 1936 to 1954, a period of enormous growth. He also helped found the College Park Rotary Club. The stadium that bore his name was renamed in 2015 over his documented record of racial segregation.
